How to Protect Your Lips from the Sun

During this time of year, you may hear frequent reminders about how important it is to apply sunscreen and take other measures to avoid getting burned in the summer heat. Unfortunately, there is an important part of the body that often gets overlooked when it comes to sun protection — the lips. They are somewhat delicate and could develop skin cancer or oral cancer if they are frequently overexposed to UVB and UVA rays. How can you protect your lips from the sun? Follow these tips:

Wear SPF

Regular sunscreen can protect your lips just like it shields the rest of your body. However, there are a couple of caveats. It may not taste very good, and it could irritate the delicate skin around your mouth.

As an alternative, pick up a moisturizing lip balm with SPF. You will probably come across varieties with SPF 15 and SPF 30. SPF 15 filters out 93% of the sun’s harmful rays, whereas SPF 30 filters out 97%. Try to opt for an SPF 30 product if possible.

Reapply Your SPF

One of the most common mistakes people make with SPF products is that they forget about the importance of reapplication. Regular sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours. SPF lip balms, on the other hand, might wear off more quickly if you are eating or licking your lips. Therefore, you might find it beneficial to aim for hourly reapplication.

Wear a Hat

A hat can provide some shade for your face and reduce the risk that your lips will burn. Here are a few notes on choosing a suitable hat:

  • Mesh hats and similar styles are not as effective as hats made with a solid material.
  • It is generally best to choose a hat that is labeled as offering UPF 50 or higher.
  • Make sure the hat’s brim is wide enough to protect your lips. A baseball cap or sunhat works well.

Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

The middle of the day (typically between 11 A.M. and 4 P.M. daylight savings time) tends to be when the sun’s rays are harshest and hottest. If possible, stay indoors or under shade during that time period. Concentrate your activities in the mornings and evenings.

Your lips are an important part of your smile and your oral health! This summer, take steps to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays.
